Shawn Evans

SHAWN EVANS, “QUANTUM SKY”, 2023, OIL, OIL STICK AND ACRYLIC ON CANVAS, 76” X 96”

Shawn Evans developed his own form of abstraction through architecture and its relationship to urban and natural landscape. Motivated by his understanding of the importance of space and perspective, Evans’ work is inspired by his collection of personal photographs that serve as source material for his paintings.

The use of his own photographs also encourages Evans’ liberating sense of color. Painting strong chromatic hues alongside muted grey tones, color is at the forefront of his works. Evans uses color to highlight the discord between the static reality captured in photographs and the unreliable subjectivity of experience and memory.

Born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, Shawn Evans moved to Calgary to attend the Alberta University of the Arts (formerly Alberta College of Art and Design) . Since graduating in 2009, he has committed himself to a disciplined studio practice. His work is in the permanent collections of various private and public institutes, including Jim and Susan Hill (The Esker Foundation), Air Canada, The Bank of Montreal, and Field Law, Calgary. He currently lives and works in Toronto, Ontario.
