SHAWN EVANS

 23 MAY to 28 JUNE, 2014

"Ontological Liberty", 2013, oil on canvas, 72” x 66”

Emerging from his early influences in abstract expressionism, Shawn Evans found his own abstraction in architecture and the landscape of cities. Working from his collection of personal photographs, his paintings capture the complexities of urban spaces combined with the shifting perspectives of eroding memory.

Evans’ most distinguishing feature is his skillful use of colour. Inspired by the mastery of artists such as Agnes Martin and Gerhard Richter, Evans “manipulates greys, pushing as much colour into them before they register as colour,” which lends his pallet an unusual intensity.

Born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, Shawn Evans moved to Calgary to attend the Alberta College of Art and Design. Since graduating in 2009, he has committed himself to a disciplined studio practice. He currently lives and works in Toronto, Ontario.
