Canadian painter Alex Bierk has an honest, powerful way of seeing the world around him. Finding source images through the lens of his camera, his skillfully rendered, photorealistic paintings become an archive of his experiences and memories. Though deeply personal, his works have a poignant social relevance. Choosing simple subject matter, Bierk causes pause with his exceptional portrayal of light, his reflections on loss and the passage of time.
Alex was born and raised in Peterborough, Ontario and returned as an adult to raise his own young family in the same community. In 2013, he was a finalist for the Kingston Prize, a national bi-annual portrait competition, and has since been the recipient of grants from the Toronto and Ontario Arts Councils, as well as the Canada Council for the Arts. Alex has exhibited his paintings in group and solo exhibitions in Canada, the United States and internationally. His work is held in the collections of the Royal Bank of Canada, TD Bank and the Art Gallery of Peterborough.
